Video: Use of slang within a consult
This discussion illustrates the difficulties in understanding Australian slang, and the importance of clarification. Requires Quicktime Player.

Australian Slang Handbook
This resource was developed by Dr Anna Chur-Hansen of the University of Adelaide, and was adapted to the General Practice context in 2006 by Dr Taryn Elliott and Ms Leticia Supple, of Adelaide to Outback GP Training Program. The Handbook outlines information about Australian slang and recommendations for dealing with it in the clinical context. A dictionary of common slang found in the South Australian clinical context is also included. This resource is updated in line with changes in common slang.

Medical jargon worksheet
This worksheet was developed by Ms Deb-Coleman George, an applied linguist and educator at the University of Adelaide, and Dr Jenni Goold, an AOGP Medical Educator. The worksheet discusses the levels of language appropriate to the different contexts in which a doctor may find themselves. It also encourages practice in avoiding medical jargon, and in breaking down complex concepts into simpler language.
Jargon Worksheet Plan

Consultation plan
This sheet provides a basic template for a consult based in the Australian General Practice context. It was written by AOGP Medical Educators Dr Cate Howell, Dr Sean Taylor, Dr Jenni Goold, and Dr Taryn Elliott. The plan includes the various stages that are important in a consult, and it provides illustrative sentences to explain to the patient where each of the phases begins, and what will happen during that phase. This is a useful plan to help organise a consult and enhance doctor-patient understanding.
