Learning Needs Analysis
Adelaide to Outback GP Training Program acknowledges the importance of both language and communication skills within the clinical encounter. Thus, we have developed and successfully piloted a learning needs analysis including the assessment of language and communication. This analysis is available for all Registrars and IMGs in our program, and its purpose is to assist in identifying individual and group learning needs to address during their training program. This is in an effort to provide the best support possible to our GP Registrars and IMGs, and meets the requirements of a directive received from GPET (AGPT, 2005). Our criteria for design of the method were that it would:

What the method involves
The method for analysis of communication and language requires each participant to participate in two Objective Structured Clinical Interviews (OSCIs). Interviews are videotaped for later analysis. Followin g the interview, the participant completes two written tasks. One is used to assess written language skills, the other is used to assess reflection on communication skills (see below).

LNA Flowchart

This process draws on a validated language rating scale. It also views communication from the patient's perspective, and from the perspective of a trained observer using an expert rating scale. A number of ratings are collected per scale to reduce bias.

Once results have been collected and analysed, they are presented back to the participants according to a feedback proforma in the context of a one-on-one meeting with a medical educator. A script has been designed to guide this feedback process.

Further Development
AOGP is currently working to further develop this package based on feedback received. If you are interested in further information please contact Dr Taryn Elliott.
