Fellowship Support Program
Adelaide to Outback GP Training Program (AOGP) has been providing support to rural-based International Medical Graduates (IMGs) within the AOGP training region preparing for the RACGP examination via the alternative pathway since 2003. This was enabled through vision and funding from Rural Doctors Workforce Agency (RDWA). A basic model for this support is shown below. The model is based around a regionally distributed team of IMG Medical Educators to provide localised support, and an Education Support Team to coordinate the process. The acquisition of recent additional funding has allowed for important enhancement of the existing support program (see ROVE). We believe this is essential for the sustainability of our program.

Core Support process

The IMG Fellowship Support Process

The AOGP project team has developed an effective process of individualising education support. The whole program is tailored to each IMG’s individual needs, while still providing information essential to understanding the requirements of the RACGP exam.

Our education support is driven by a team of IMG Medical Educators. The team is made up of Registrar-graduates, GP Supervisors, and IMG Fellowship Support Program graduates. They have diverse backgrounds and medical experiences, but are all passionate about education.

Feedback and results
We advocate the incorporation of the results of evaluation and feedback into the program’s structure. Doing so has seen the program evolve to its current state. We encourage our IMG MEs to continue to provide feedback and suggestions to the AOGP project team so that this evolution is continuous. The success of our feedback-based support is reflected in the pass results of our IMGs.

Eligibility

There are three eligibility criteria which must be satisfied in order to qualify for our program.

  1. RDWA must deem the applicant eligibile to join the Fellowship Support Program.
  2. The applicant must be practising in the AOGP Fellowship Support Program training region.

For eligibility enquiries please contact RDWA on (08) 8234 8277. All IMGs who are eligible for the program are sent an application form by AOGP.
